GRL recognized as an Authorized Test Lab for Thread 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 smart home devices

Accreditation positions GRL as a one-stop certification testing shop for new Thread and Matter solutions that will transform the consumer experience and unlock possibilities for manufacturers

SANTA CLARA, Calif., March 3, 2023 – Granite River Labs (GRL), a global leader in engineering services, test automation solutions for digital connectivity and charging technologies, and professional market access services, has been officially recognized by the Thread Group as an authorized test laboratory (ATL). GRL now offers customers certification testing, pre-certification testing and debugging services for smart home devices and Internet of Things (IoT) wireless products across the full range of Thread 1.1, 1.2 and 1.3 specifications.

This development follows GRL’s recent inclusion in the first batch of laboratories accredited by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) to provide testing for the new Matter 1.0 standard, which the CSA describes as “the foundation for connected things.” The combination of Matter at the application software layer with the power, simplicity and reliability of Thread networks promises to transform the smart home experience for consumers and unlock tremendous possibilities for manufacturers.

Based on open and proven IPv6 standards, Thread offers low-power and low-latency wireless mesh networking that eliminates single points of failure, and can even self-heal. Thread devices seamlessly integrate with larger IP networks without the need for proprietary gateways or translators, to maximize convenience for consumers while reducing the infrastructure burden. However, the performance and interoperability of Thread-based IoT devices such as lights, thermostats, door locks, and security cameras depends on certification testing for qualified laboratories with the requisite Thread testing expertise.

“GRL has been part of the Thread story since 2015 when we were selected by the Thread Group to develop the certification process and test harness,” said Vamshi Kandalla, Chief Strategy Officer of Granite River Labs. “That depth of expertise and familiarity has enabled us to achieve accredited test lab accreditation quickly, positioning GRL as a genuine one-stop shop for Thread and Matter testing.”

“The Thread Group is committed to helping the entire smart home ecosystem harness the power of the Internet of Things through its IP-based, low power, low-latency, reliable and secure mesh networking technology,” Vividh Siddha, President of the Thread Group “GRL’s accredited Thread testing and certification services will help accelerate the development of innovative new products and enable users to easily connect, configure, and use their Matter devices with any certified Thread network faster and more dependably.”
