Now certified by WPC to test the latest 25W moving coil technology for automotive and consumer applications.

Granite River Labs (GRL), a global leader in engineering services and test automation solutions for digital connectivity, charging technologies, and professional market access services, has been officially approved by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) to perform both Qi v2.2.0 and v2.2.1 wireless charging certification testing. This includes support for the latest 25W Application Power Profile (APP) featuring moving coil technology, a key enabler for next-generation in-vehicle wireless charging. With this approval, GRL Japan can now cover the entire range of 25W wireless charging technologies for consumer and automotive applications.

This achievement, which comes just a few short months after GRL Japan's designation for Qi v2.1 in March 2025, makes the lab among the earliest labs worldwide to offer certification services for Qi v2.2.0. In addition, GRL Japan has officially become the first lab approved for Qi v2.2.1 worldwide, offering the latest certification testing service for smartphone manufacturers, automotive OEMs, and accessory brands.

About Qi v2.2.1, v2.2.0 and APP (Moving Coil)

Released by WPC just one month ago in June 2025, Qi v2.2.0 increases the maximum wireless charging power for smartphones to 25W—bringing it on par with common wired charging solutions. At the same time, Qi v2.2.1's APP improves charging alignment and efficiency in automotive environments and other scenarios where precise device placement is difficult.

APP as defined in Qi v2.2.1 functions as the power transmitter, while Qi v2.2.0's Enhanced Power Profile (EPP) and Magnetic Power Profile (MPP) serve as power receptors within smartphones and mobile devices. Together, these technologies work as a complementary pair to enable wireless charging.

“Qi v2.2 represents a new era for wireless charging, especially in the automotive sector,” said Kenichi Suganami, General Manager of GRL Japan. “We look forward to helping our customers bring safer, more convenient, and environmentally-friendly wireless charging products to market now that 25W APP certification is available through GRL Japan.”
